Update

Things have been going great lately. I am loving Boone it never ceases to amaze me. The weather is its usual crazy but I guess that come with the package.

I have had a pretty exciting few weeks lately. I have accepted a volunteer position with Dianjiang Kids and will now be their director of communications. I am so excited to be working with an organization that makes such a difference in the lives of the children in China  especially those that are left behind and never adopted. I think everyone by now knows where my heart lies when it come to orphans and how much they tug at it. I love visiting those who don't have families and I am hoping and praying to return during the summer of 2013. I have missed loving on "my" China babies. I haven't made a complete decision on where I will be going in China as I am currently torn between two places and if I can I will be visiting both places.

This last week was a wee bit of a challenge however. I have had my first exam of sophomore year and thankfully it went very well! I am so happy with my classes. My professors are all great and I thoroughly enjoying being a TA. Volleyball continues to test me and I am still no where near good but I am loving the opportunity to try a new sport. The soreness isn't nearly as bad as it was in the beginning and the bruises from serving are no more! Anthro is going to be the death of me a science class for 2.5 hours on a MONDAY is killer and it is miracle that I have survived 4 of them.

The LLC bug has started once again and thankfully (knock on wood) I have avoided it. It does not look like much fun and I cannot miss class. Too much to do to ever get sick that and I don't want to go to class feeling under the weather!

This past weekend I hosted 3 yes 3 high school girls in my room. They were here for the open house and I thought I was boring until I met them. We took them on a very easy and yes I really mean easy hike to do a bon fire with smores and they complained. They just wanted to sit around and do nothing. My mom and Lily visited this past weekend as well and I think Lily enjoyed the college life just a little too much. It was nice to see them and get to spend time with them in Boone. Fall break is in two weeks and I am looking forward to going home. I am however ready for this week to just be over, between tests and quizzes I am exhausted and it is only Monday. Wednesday I am giving blood, please pray that I can stay healthy and don't freak at the needle. Court is going with me and will be holding my hand. I am the biggest wimp when it comes to that needle.

Until next time,
Taylor

Football Season has begun!!

The gorgeous rainbow that appeared over Kidd Brewer Stadium last night
Oh how I love college football especially AppState football. I guess it is just something about the time of year that makes me oh so happy or maybe just being around people who love football as much as I do? I really don't know but I am just glad football season is back. There is nothing more excited than walking out of your dorm room and seeing all the black and gold across campus. It makes me smile so much! I love my school and all the school spirit that is around me from the students and community all the way to the fans and alumni!

This year I am working event staff at football games and my main job is working the student and student guest gate to make sure no one enters the football stadium without having a valid ticket or student I.D. We also have to keep our eyes open to make sure no one is trying to sneak items past the bag checkers and bring in prohibited items such as umbrellas, massive strollers, cigarettes, alcohol etc. However, watching the cops pat down individuals is quite entertaining especially after they find such items on them. We only had one major problem where people got testy. Our scanners all decided to go down at the same time and we couldn't let people in the gate for like 10 minutes but after that was done things moved quickly. After the majority of people are in I am basically a floater and last night I ended up in the stands a place I did not enjoy very much; even though I got to watch the game while working it is not a place I want to be again!
Catherine my coworker and I before the game.

Working the stands last night was an adventure all in itself! People fight over the craziest crap. It was ridiculous what I had to put up with and be the moderator between. Thankfully I have wonderful supervisors who took over and finished with the ordeals but my goodness the adults were worse than the students at least when we confronted a student they apologized and stopped what they were doing and didn't do it again. But the "adults" they acted like such children last night granted yes many were beyond wasted and smelled like they had bathed in alcohol since 11 am when tailgating began but still. We had an almost fight over the yellow chains that keep people from walking in front of the stands and blocking fire/emergency exits one girl blamed another for cussing at her when she tried to step though the gap between the pole that holds the chain and the bleacher. That dumb chain was the cause of the majority of the headache last night and people not wanting to listen and understand that unless they were on the from row or in the handicap section they couldn't cross it. Some guy even decided he wanted to get in my face over it and started complaining to me how I was being rude and inconsiderate and how he had paid all this money and wasn't going to be told by a student he couldn't walk where ever he wanted. Which we all know I like my personal space and that was about enough for me. It was settled however and my supervisor spoke with him.  Then after we had just about settled that ordeal we had a guy start puking thankfully we were told and then just went and got EMS/the cops and they handled it. The last major event we had was a girl getting punched in the face by another girl and it wasn't an oh my stop it punch it was awful the poor girl had blood running down her face and swelling already starting, thankfully, we just had to inform our supervisors and the cops and they took care of that but still it was a crazy night!

On a lighter note though I am loving my job even though it got a wee bit stressful last night. I am working with an amazing group of people andI do love working gates and getting to see everyone come in excited about the game.

Referral Day and LID

September 2nd is a special day in our family. Four years ago today we got the phone call from our adoption agency that forever changed our lives. "You have a little girl waiting in China and she is beautiful!!" Man were they ever right she is a beautiful little girl and we love her so much!! We couldn't imagine life without our Lily.

I remember the day we got the call four years ago. I was a sophomore in high school and September 1st we had heard that families in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe had received their referral and that our log in date of February 6, 2006 was in. It would be the following day before we heard anything and got our official referral with the time difference and what not but still that was the longest day of the 3 year wait. When we started the process for Lily in fall of 2005 and were logged in the following February we were told we would have Lily home by Christmas of 2006 but as many know China has experienced a MAJOR slow down in traditional adoptions and we got stuck and caught in the first of it. We waited 37 long months to see her face but as many have said after they saw their little ones face it was so worth all the long wait and months of paper work and they are right the long wait seems to just disappear when you look at their face and realize they are coming home finally. That and had we not have gotten caught in the wait our little one wouldn't have been our Lily as she wasn't born until December of 2007,

On September 2nd our official referral day I was in yearbook class when my mom sent me a text saying that the call had come through from our agency. Over the phone we learned that Lily was waiting in Jiangxi China in a small rural city at an orphanage that we have since learned is one of the better ones in China. She was 8 months old at referral time and her pictures were taken in April of 2008 when she was four months old. Pictures came not to long after my mom got off the phone with our agency case worker and it was love at first sight for our family. I didn't get to see Lily's picture until I got home from school later that day mother didn't know how to take a pic and send it via text yet. But it was so worth the wait to see her 4 pictures my words were "Awe she is so cute and looks so sweet!"

After Lily's referral we had to wait 8 long weeks before we were allowed to travel. We were got caught with travel at the same time the Trade fair was going on in Guangzhou and since that is a city we have to go through we had to wait 2 weeks longer before we could travel.

Lily with her referral pictures. I think these are the same ones we printed out 4 years ago!

Also 3 years ago on this day our paperwork was logged into the Chinese system for Jacob's adoption!

Amanda and Nashville TN

As many of you know my wonderful friend Amanda passed away in July. In early August her celebration of life was held in Nashville TN. My family and I attended the service and spent some time exploring Nashville. The service was hard to attend but being able to hear from many of the individuals Amanda has met was wonderful. I loved seeing the babies that attended many of whom I had met when I volunteered with Amanda at her Foster home in Xi'An. I loved getting to see Josiah James, James at Starfish.
Josiah hasn't changed a bit. He is still as loving as ever! Oh how I have missed that little boy. I love that his family has kept in touch and has continued to allow me to watch him grow. Him and Lily also hit it off. They got along great and Josiah is quite the charmer still. Lily is still talking about how cute he is. Which of course I agree he is a cute little guy.

At the memorial I was also able to meet Amanda's mother who traveled from South Africa to be there. Amanda's mother was able to take a picture with all the babies that Amanda had saved who attended the memorial.

I love seeing all  those adorable faces and knowing that they are here today healthy and united with forever families because Amanda said yes to God even though the deed looked impossible. She was able during her life to save and care for 168 babies. That 's 168 lives that were forever changed and in many cases even more because those children have gone on the change the lives of many volunteers and the lives of the families that have adopted them.

It's not everyday that you meet an angel on this earth. Amanda was an angel and because of her there are a 100+ little ones alive to change the world and make it a better place for all.

Below are many of  the little ones who are alive today because of Amanda and the work she did during her life time. (The children in the fist picture are all still in China waiting for their adoptive families to come and get them, a few have left since this picture was taken)

Ava and the difference Amanda made in her life.

Amanda's foster home is still in operation and it is the hope of Starfish to continue to fulfill her wish of opening an even bigger place and owning her own home so that she could save even more babies! To leave more about Starfish and the work they do in China please visit HERE

Heaven Gained an Angel!

Amanda de Lange 1961-2012

Today July 14th at 11:48 east coast time our beloved Amanda de Lange went home to be with our savior. All of Heaven rejoiced today with the homecoming of the newest angel. Our dear and beloved Amanda went home to our Savior this morning. She will be dearly missed on this side of Heaven, but I know she is pain free and rejoicing with our Savior today. She has left a legacy that will live on through all of the babies she cared for and all of the volunteers she touched. I am sure all of her babies who went home before her are glad to have their "momma" home with them. I can only imagine the line of individuals and all your children who welcomed you home. Heaven is a better place because of you. This world could use many, many more Amanda's. I know I will miss you dearly Amanda you have forever changed my life and I have been blessed to know you and call you my friend! I know you said no tears but it is so hard not to cry. You were an angel on earth and the Lord needed you home more than he needed you here! “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.” This verse is from Romans 8:28 and my friend Amanda's favorite words from the Bible. Please click here to read more about Amanda and to get information about when her celebration of life will be.

Amanda and I fist met via email back in the summer of 2009 when I started planning the trip I would take to volunteer to help orphans in China. I was 16 years old at that time and I had emailed many foster homes about coming to volunteer and all of them except Amanda at Starfish said that I was to young and could not come or that they were full for the summer of 2010. I remember one of the first emails I ever got from her was we would love to have you come stay with us no one is ever to young to help! Those words have forever stuck with me because no one ever is to young to help sometimes the youngest of all is the one that makes the biggest difference. Once I got closer to traveling for my first trip and sent Amanda an email telling her are definite dates she told me that they were there waiting on our arrival and couldn't wait to help us have a meaningful trip to China.

My first trip was amazing and I loved everything that Amanda was doing in Xi'an I quickly came home and started preparing for the next summer because I knew for a fact I was going back to China to volunteer at Starfish! I loved the fact that she didn't turn a baby away and fought for every baby that was in her care. She and her nannies nurtured and cared for every baby that came through the Starfish doors until they were adopted. Occasionally babies came through the Starfish doors way to sick and could not be saved but they knew even with their short time here what love was and how it felt to be loved and that was the most important thing.

The summer of 2011 I returned to China again to volunteer at Starfish and I once again saw babies lives transformed. The little 6 that had arrived about the same time I did in 2010 were thriving and so loving. When you walk into a normal city orphanage you are met with children who don't know what a hug is or how it feels to be cuddled. Their eyes are not full of hope and they all seem so sad but this was so far from the children I was met with I Starfish. I was met (tackled) by children who wanted me to play. I had children on me from the time I got to the baby rooms until the time I left. I fed and changed babies way to many times to count. But I could feel love all around me! The nannies truly loved "their" children and fought so they could have the best. If the health of a child was even questioned the child was given the best medical care possible in mainland China. We lost a baby on my second trip to Starfish, a rotto virus spread though the isolation room and one of the little cleft boys who I loved dearly caught it and his weak body could not fight it off. I saw how it affected Amanda to loose a baby he wasn't just a number in her head he was a little person she had grew to love and cherish in the 2 weeks he had been at Starfish. I know little Jules was dearly loved and cared for. He was snuggled by countless volunteers, nannies and Amanda. He was soothed when he cried and fed when ever he was hungry. We could all see the lose in Amanda's eyes when she was told the news and we all knew her heart broke when she found out he would not be coming back home to Starfish. However I do know this Jules along with Thomas who I met my first trip were two of many Starfish babies who completely healed welcomed Amanda home today. Because of Amanda those two little boys knew what it meant to be loved and cherished even if it was only for two weeks or two years, they knew someone cared and loved them.

Amanda was a very stubborn person and knew how to get what she and her babies needed. The health of her babies came above all other things and she would quickly let you know if you did anything that could harm her children. She fought tooth and nail for them and made sure they had the best care takers, best nutrition, and the best medical care possible even if that meant she had to travel with them. None of her babies tummies ever went empty nor were their boo boos un-kissed. She loved her babies to pieces and it was clear. Amanda also had to deal with the government orphanage where most of her babies came from and they were not the nicest people to deal with. There have been several occasion where they told her she could not have that baby she had to pick one who would make it and she didn't need to waste her time on a baby that was going to die. However if Amanda was set on bringing that child home she didn't care what the orphanage told her that baby was coming home with her. Amanda was able to look past the sickly baby laying in the crib and see the potential that child had.

Amanda is one of the reason I started Still We Wait my advocacy blog. I feel head over heels in love with a little boy at her Foster Home and found him on a list and started advocating and it grew from there! Amanda is and always will be a person a strongly admire. She gave up her comfortable life to take care of babies who needed her. She served the children of China for 6 years and never complained. She had her heart broken countless times with the passing of children or the adoption of children to families who would not keep in contact. But she kept saving the lives of helpless babies she never gave up until she literally could not do it any more. She placed her babies even above herself and lived off a budget that most people could not fathom everything donated went to the babies and she never took anything for herself.

Below is an essay I had to write for a program that I applied to about a person I admired and looked up to:

Name someone you believe has shown a strong commitment to something s/he
believes in, and how this person has influenced you in your personal growth .

Amanda de Lange is an amazing person who has changed my views on how people are to treat the least of the least. Amanda runs a foster home in Xi'an, China for special needs orphans; she has invested her life and savings in this home in order to help vulnerable children of China who are medically fragile. She believes, it is impossible to help every child or individual in the world, but you can make a difference for many. She has shown me how I can also make a difference in someone's life even if it is something as simple as to wave hello to someone I would normally not speak too. She knows that there is and always will be someone out there who is worse off than herself and has made a point to help those that are less fortunate than her. She has shown me that through dedication and support that I too can impact the orphans of the world. It is partly because of what she does for those children that I have started an advocacy blog to advocate for waiting children around the world to help them find families http://stillwewait.blogspot.com/ . Amanda inspires me to be someone bigger than myself and to help those so many others overlook. She has shown me that every child regardless of gender or special need, deserve a chance to a new start. Because of her over 100 children in the Shaanxi Province have had that chance at a new life; so many of the children she cares for have came to her close to death. She is their angel on earth and brings them back from the downturn. When you walk into Starfish like I did this past summer, you are not met with sick children laying in beds like you are in a typical Chinese orphanage; you are embraced by loving and energetic toddlers and babies wanting your attention. Amanda is the reason that I have set out to make a difference in the lives of Children in China whether it is by supporting her through donations or summer volunteer trips. One day I would like to start my own foster home either in China or another country to help vulnerable children.

Internship day 1:

I am going to try to find time each day to post about my internship somedays will be easier than others so bear with me! I know I am bad at blogging and already behind with the Starfish reunion which I am still working on and will get it up soon I promise but here is day one of my internship with the kids!

To say today was an interesting day and hard day would be a massive understatement! My kids are all adorable they are just challenging to teach as many do not like each other or their families do not get along. I have one little girl who is a cute as a button and very tiny but boy is she feisty she has a very colorful vocabulary as well and said some choice words to other students. I also have two little boys who have special needs one is very difficult to handle and I am consistently telling him no we cannot do that, sit down please, do not touch that, get out from there, etc. The other little one with a special need is wonderful he does everything I ask and does his work and keeps to himself, and doesn’t bother a sole. You would never know that those two are brothers at all they are so different! I have one little girl who is an absolute angel and listens so well, if I could have 11 more of her my class would be wonderful. She is so easy and sweet! Each and every one of them is sweet in their own way and they all crave attention but when you are the only one given it and 5 at the same time want it it’s not possible to meet everyone’s need. I was to the post of tears almost by the end of the day because of stress and pure exhaustion. Misbehaving happens quite a bit in my class. Touching things that are off limits coloring on others, dumping glitter in the floor etc. I was so close to having to send one little one out for just completely ignoring me and doing the opposite of what I would say. I have decided I am in no way equipped to teach elementary kids! It will be a long and fun 6 weeks with these little ones and my class will only grow from here! Please continue to pray as the time progresses and that the little ones start to behave for me.  Also as a side note I am not able to post pictures of my children for privacy reasons but any links that I find of my little ones I can post so I will try to get those up when possible!

Summer has Began!

Well it is officially summer!! My break began about a week ago. I am loving being home, its so nice not having any papers or school work in general!

Summer so far has been wonderful, other than moving out of the L, which was awful. I got Home Saturday the 12th at about lunch time. I unloaded my car and my moms van which was much easier than loading it since I had two little helpers who brought things and and carried them to my room.
Claire joined us Monday night and stayed until today when I took her to the airport. I must say it is going to be weird not having her around. I miss her already. She was the best roommate ever. I love her and cannot wait to visit her in China!!

I cannot wait for my internship to start next week and I am throughly excited about it. I missed the orientation session so I have not met my kids yet. Please keep me in your prayers though the location I am at is in the worst neighborhood in Charlotte. They have had 3 murders in the last 2 weeks and one was in broad daylight right across from the school I am in. I cannot wait to get started though and the meet my 3rd-5th graders. I an so glad I was not placed with middler schoolers but this might be the reassurance I need that I am not cut out to be an elementary school teacher. I could go on and on about my internship but training starts next week and then I leave for TN for a week. Also on a side note one of the individuals I will be working with goes to ASU and even graduated from the same high school as I did just one year before me.

Memorial day weekend is coming up and I am so thrilled for it as I am headed to Nashville for the Starfish Reunion. I cannot wait to see so many of the babies I met my first year again and to meet many Starfish babies that I did not get to care for. I also get to see little James while I am there. Which as many of you know is the little guy who stole my heart the summer of 2010!! I also get to meet his wonderful family who has kept in touch with me and let me watch him grow!

No pictures for this post as I haven't really taken any other than the ones I took of Claire leaving today but those will be on facebook so be on the look out for them! Also it appears that I am on a once a month update hopefully I will break that soon since I am home and have a little more free time. But feel free to follow me on facebook!
